Water spots are mineral deposits etched onto the glass and they can be very tough to remove. When a drop of water evaporates, all the minerals contained in that droplet remain on the glass.

Etching is a gradual process, but these little spots will accumulate over time. Glass can be polished, just like car paint. Polishing removes water spots and cloudiness.
